The Ilocano Association of Australia will mark the Feast of Our Lady of Manaoag Saturday 19 October with Mass at St Joachim’s Catholic Church, highlighting the Ilocanos’ devotion to the Blessed Virgin.
A novena precedes the celebration, with the image transferring from home to home until it reaches the church in Lidcombe for the 11am Mass.
Novena hosts include Kate Andres, Mildred Banan, Serna Ladia, Jojo and Marideth Laquian, Aida Lastica, Jimmy and Myrma Lopez, Espie Pogson, Judith del Prado.
Lunch, live music and dancing follows the Mass to be officiated by Fr Ed Orilla.
The IAA has encouraged its members and friends to join the festivities.
According to Wikipedia, “The ivory and silver image which bears its title dates from the 16th century and is presently enshrined within the Minor Basilica of Our Lady of the Most Holy Rosary of Manaoag. The shrine is a major pilgrimage site in the country and is administered by the Order of Preachers within the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan.
“Pope Pius XI granted a Canonical Coronation to the image on 22 April 1926, while Pope Benedict XVI raised her sanctuary in equal indulgences to the Basilica of Saint Mary Major on 21 June 2011. Under this Marian title, the Blessed Virgin Mary is invoked as patroness of the sick, helpless and needy. The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag is celebrated on two feast days: the third Wednesday after Easter and first Sunday of October”.
Manaoag, officially the Municipality of Manaoag, is a first class municipality in the province of Pangasinan , Philippines , where Ilocano counts as a major dialect.
The town is a popular local pilgrimage site as it enshrines a statue of the Blessed Virgin under the title of Nuestra Señora del Rosario de Manaoag ("Our Lady of the Rosary of Manaoag"). Legend has it that a young man had a vision of St Mary, who told him to have the shrine built. Various miracles have been attributed through her intercession.
People come to Manaoag to offer devotions to the town’s patroness, locally referred to as “Apo Baket”.
