Sydney: After Australia has declared ‘human biosecurity emergency’ and NSW started its lockdown to fight the novel coronavirus pandemic, a compelling Pinoy“Kapit-bisig” (Linking Arms) story has touched and empowered many multicultural hearts.
It all started in a small suburb of southern Sydney, at Kogarah’s “Panlasang Pinoy Restaurant” with its simple “Bayanihan” spirit for affected overseas Pinoy students initiated by restaurant coupled-owners Carlito & Aleli Ferrer inspired by Randy Acierto Abundo Nota.

ABS-CBN Australia Pty Ltd and The Filipino Channel (TFC), via Ms. Linlin Linsao (Sales and Distribution Manager, Australia and New Zealand) responded to the media’s aforesaid call.
We then connected them with our local heroes: TFC Global Pinoy Idol Ms. Tess Abellada Manalang, a 52 yrs old pinoy migrant from Quezon Province, who has already orchestrated this Bayanihan spirit, being the founder of “LOVE IN ACTION”, a pinoy non profit charity group that promptly showed their support and generosity to the Filipino community.

They recently delivered a few batches of food packs to Sydney Metropolitan’s inner west of Strathfield, Ashfield, Hurstville, Campsie, Auburn , Berala, and the eastern suburbs of Rockdale and Mascot respectively.
One very specific grocery batch was house delivered by Love In Action to over 24 international students consisting of rice, noodles, peanut butter, corned beef, oatmeal, coffee packs and garlic, courtesy of the ABS-CBN Australia Pty Ltd/The Filipino Channel (TFC), the Filipino media and entertainment group.
Thank you ‘ABS-CBN Australia Pty Ltd’ and ‘Love In Action Australia’ in Condell, NSW for their joint efforts.
Parallel to these efforts, another good samaritans from the southeastern suburb of Condell: Diem Fuggersberger, CEO and co-founder of Berger Ingredients and creator of the Coco & Lucas brand, also fed and helped the pinoy students of “Love in Action.”
In two sessions: Diem Kieu Fuggersberger gave away 5 tonnes of Jasmine Rice(that is 5 thousands kilos of Rice), 1550 Eggs & 2,000 packets of Mi Goreng to the COVID-19 work-school affected multicultural international students majority of which are Filipinos and Indonesians.
Diem is Vietnamese-Australian married to an Austrian: Werner Fuggersberger, both are Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) community donors that extended help to more than a thousand affected international students.

Recap:
Diem came to Australia as a refugee when she was eight years old, having fled Vietnam with her family after the fall of Saigon.
Despite a turbulent start to her life in Australia, a love of food was instilled in her from a young age and has been the foundation of her most precious family memories.
Her mother and grandmother often shared the joy of creating a home-cooked meal for family and friends, planting the seed for Diem’s career in food.
“My Mum told me a story about when she had her 6th Child. She was not working at the time. Only my Dad worked. Although my late father was extremely skilled at tailoring, he could not make enough money to feed eight mouths around 1972.
“My Mother struggled to feed us all. She used to buy RICE from this Chinese man and his daughter would always give my mum a hard time because she did not have ENOUGH MONEY to pay until the week after. But the Chinese Man says to his daughter just give it to her she will pay.
“So ‘RICE’ has ‘NEVER’ left my mind. My Mother said to me Diem: Feed People even if they had NO MONEY as you will never run out of foods in your life I promised you, she recalls.
“We are not Rich just in our hearts. We have been donating additionally, Diem said to Tess Abellada Manalang of the Filipino community recently.
“Rice, Flour, Spaghetti Sauces, Flour, Salt, Sugar, Pastas to additional Communities that cooks for Filipino International Students or the people who has lost their jobs
“Most international students are from Indonesia last Friday morning (2nd Batch). I used to be a Refugee in Indonesia Galang Galang for 15 months so I always relate to people of all levels, Diem recalls.
“I have been cooking all my life so I understand Yields gain or cook losses. I do my experiments and recordings. If I give you 10 kgs of uncooked Rice or Pasta the yield for cooked Rice and Pasta is 1.3 yields. Which means that you got 23 kgs of cooked Rice or Pasta.
“I forecasted to make sure you had enough for nearly a months worth. Thank you, Diem added.
