The Filipino Centre Toronto Sets 2020 Outstanding Students Awards

The Filipino Centre Toronto-FCT wishes to announce anew that the "FCT- Rosalinda C. Javier Outstanding Students Awards" for the year 2020 will proceed as earlier communicated. FCT is a community-based, volunteer-run and service-oriented non-profit hub in the Greater Toronto Area(GTA), Ontario, Canada.
A trailblazing project of the Centre since 2005, it is an annual event purposely established to encourage and challenge Filipino Canadian students to perform satisfactorily well in school and to achieve academic success by recognizing and awarding the top graduates with appropriate incentives such as a cash prize and a plaque of recognition.
The prestigious competition is open to all eligible elementary, high school and post-secondary school graduates in Ontario who completed their respective studies with academic honours and other scholastic proficiencies. The selection criteria includes: Academic Grades( 50%), Extra/ Co-curricular Activities( 12.5%), Community Involvement( 12.5%) and Interview Performance( 25%).
Applications( hard copies) are now being received by mail or by hand at the Filipino Centre Toronto-FCT, c/o Tony A. San Juan, RCJ OSA Chairman at: 4395 Sheppard Avenue East, Toronto, Ontario M1S 1T9. Deadline for the submission of Completed Applications is on September 26, 2020(Saturday). Interviews for qualified Elementary( Grade 8) and Secondary( Grade 12) school graduates are scheduled to be held at the FCT Board Room on a Saturday and/or Sunday beginning in October 2020, with time still to be arranged. Post-secondary school graduates are exempted from the interview provided they meet the qualification requirements and their academic honours are rightly notated in the documents(diploma or certificate) as well.
The Awarding Day event is tentatively set on November 22, 2020( Sunday), 2:00 pm. at the FCT Social Hall. To protect the health and safety of guests, participants and the public due to COVID-19 crisis, the FCT will strictly observe the protocols and procedures( such as a face covering, physical distancing, sanitizers, % of attendees) established by the City of Toronto and other government agencies during the selection interview, the awarding program and the reception.

For Filipino-Canadian elementary and high school graduates
The Filipino Centre Toronto (FCT) has announced the opening of the 2020 Outstanding Student Award competition for all Filipino-Canadian elementary and high school graduates of Filipino heritage (one or both parents or grandparents should be Filipino) and residing in Ontario.
To qualify:
1. The applicant should be currently registered in the elementary or secondary school in the Greater Toronto Area, under one of the following categories:
· The elementary school applicant should have completed the last year of elementary school and be going into high school (grade 9) ;
· The high school applicant should be accepted and going into university ;
· The high school applicant should be accepted and going into community college;
· The high school applicant should be accepted and going into apprenticeship program.
2. The student should have a minimum academic average of 85% (or equivalent) during the last two (2) school years, and be involved in extra-curricular and community activities.
3. The applicant must submit the following documents:
· For the elementary school graduate – Original copies of final report cards for the last two years
· For the high school graduate – A current and original transcript bearing the school’s official seal
· Two (2) original letters of character reference (one from the school, excluding immediate family)
· Two (2) passport-size photos
· Completed application form
Evaluation will be based on scholastic achievement (50%), community involvement and extra-curricular activities (25%) and interview (25%).
(All applicants, who have been screened and approved by the Student Awards Committee, will be recognized and honoured. Monetary awards and trophies will be presented to the winners of each category. The Awards Ceremony will take place on Sunday,
October 25, 2020 , 2:00 p.m. at the Centre.

FCT Outstanding Student Award Competition For Filipino-Canadian post-secondary graduates
A. Qualification Requirements for Post- Secondary Honour Awardees
Any applicant or candidate for an FCT AWARD must be a:
1. Natural-born Filipino or of Filipino descent (either parent is Filipino);
2. Citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada;
3. Of good moral character, i.e. has no pending charge involving sexual or
child abuse or criminal case;
4. 1. For Undergraduate: Baccalaureate Degree candidates
--- Must have achieved Academic Honours, with Notation printed in the
candidate's degree diploma, such as any of the following:
* Summa Cum Laude or Magna Cum Laude or Cum Laude
* With Highest Distinction (GPA 3.8 or higher) or With Distinction (3.5 to 3.79)
4.2. For Graduate: Masteral or Doctoral Degree candidates
--- Must have achieved Graduate Average Grade of :
* Letter Grades of A+, A, A- only.
* Numerical Marks of: 90-100%, 85-89%, 80 -84% only.
* High Pass-Clear Excellence or equivalent marking scale.
B. Documents (Photocopies only) to be submitted upon Application:
1. Degree program: Bachelor's Diploma with Academic
Citation.
2. Graduate program: Transcript of Academic Record.
3. Passport-size Photo.
4. Completed FCT Application Form.
C. Notes:
1) Degree holders with "Honours" added into their Diploma or
Parchment is not an Academic Award, but rather indicates a
completion of 4-year degree compared to a 3-year degree
program, as for example: Bachelor of Arts (Honours).
2) Candidates who are conferred with Honoris Causa, is a special /
honorary citation and thus, not an acceptable Academic Honour.
3) Academic awards received must not be more than 5 years old,
from date of application.
