University of Technology Sydney (UTS) Educator Josie Musa commented on the result of the project:
“three core ideas has emerged: anxiety, insecurity and gratitude, when I spoke to international students who were present during the food drive, Josie said.
On anxiety and the norm:
“Many students reflected on how they are coping with feeling overwhelmed and frustrated as they adapt to the new normal.
“As classes moved online causing anxiety for some, the monotonous routines and being homebound has led to struggles with self-regulation, keeping up with content and feeling isolated from fellow students or others.
“Difficulties in studying while dealing with other COVID-19 stresses like dreadful world updates, panic-buying and fear of what would happen to themselves, as well as their family and friends.
“One student commented that the routines of life that had been suddenly disrupted, everyone seemed to be at a loss as to how to continue about their daily life, others are worried about where to go if they can’t pay their rentand whether to return home.
Risky or indefensible feeling:
“Financial risk was discussed particularly the loss of casual and part-time work, with its knock-on effect to housing instability, paying rent and their future housing situations.
“One student said “A friend had to unexpectedly return to Australia and couldn’t find anywhere to stay for the 14 days of self-isolation on a low budget. My two housemates and I gave him our lounge room to help both him and us with rent as we’d all lost our jobs, Ms Musa recalls.
Focus on gratitude:
“Despite the circumstances, gratitude is a recurring theme throughout the day, many students were in tears showing an ‘overwhelming gratitude’ at the layers upon layers of support from the community groups, friends and families that they don’t even know at all. Time gained through job loss was spent on these families as well as friends, pets and nature.
“Giving assistance to others despite physical distancing has created a new sense of social inclusion for me and many students were so grateful that they are being reach via social media and word of mouth, Ms. Musa added.
