In colourful frocks, attractive hats, and with matching joie de vivre, the Association of Golden Australian Pilipinos Inc (AGAPI) recreated the Melbourne Cup spirit 10 Nov at the Rooty Hill School of Arts, serving up food, laughter and fun like no other .

Olimpia Reyes, Susana Agcaoili, Edna Onato, Dorothy del Villar, Elaine Liddle, Sara Dawson, Vicky Tinker all dressed up for the occasion

The Melbourne Cup, held annually at Flemington Racecourse in Melbourne, Victoria, is Australia’s best-known Thoroughbred horse race for three-year olds and over, according to Wikipedia.

Birthday celebrants (front) Rey, Nita Tingson, Vicky Tinker, Luzpalia Cordoba, Gregoria Rosario receive well-wishes from (back) Faith Montecillo, Dorothy del Villar, Thelma Junio, Mila Martin, Maria Singh, Caridad Morabe.

Conducted by the Victoria Racing Club, the 3,200-metre race starts 3pm on the first Tuesday of November and is part of the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival.

Celebrants Gregoria Rosario, Vicky Tinker, Luzpalia Cordoba, Nita Tingson, Rey cut their joint birthday cake with AGAPI president Dorothy del Villar (left).

Known locally as the race that stops a nation and where fashion seems de rigueur, the Melbourne Cup was inaugurated 1861.

Susana Agcaoili had the ‘most artistic’ headgear.
“The Melbourne Cup seems to be a good excuse to dress up and get into the spirit of the occasion,” said AGAPI president Dorothy del Villar. The members agreed; most brought their dancing shoes as well.AGAPI also feted its November-born members – Luzpalia Cordoba, Gregorio Rosario, Vicky Tinker, Nita Tingson and her husband Rey – with hugs, kisses and a joint birthday cake.
