Adelaide-September 29: Ethnic Radyo Pilipino Incorporated in Adelaide otherwise known as RADYO PILIPINO was founded on 18 June 1978. Members commemorated its 40th foundation anniversary with a dinner-dance at the Grand Chancellor Hotel, 63 Hindley Street in the city on 29 September 2018.
In attendance were some dignitaries including the main guest of honor the Assistant Minister (Multiculturalism) to the SA Premier, the Hon. Jing Lee MLC and husband Eddie Liew, the Shadow Minister for Multiculturalism Mrs. Katrine Hildyard and husband Charles Wright, the Lord Mayor of Adelaide Martin Haese and wife Genevieve Theseira, Senator Don Farrell and wife Nimfa, the Philippine Honorary Consul Darryl Johnson and former Philippine Hon ConGen Mark McBriarty and wife Lee.
ERPI President Celia Guillermo delighted everyone with her Welcome Address. The Hon. Jing Lee MLC extolled Filipinos for their industry, talents and resilience in maintaining their cultural heritage while participating actively in the social and economic development of South Australia. In my message to the body as ERPI Founding President-Broadcaster, I emphasized the importance of combined responsible leadership and conscientious voluntary service as key to RADYO PILIPINO’s unwavering commitment to community building activities since founding in 1978.
Preparations for the 40th Anniversary Celebration were handled with much care and concern by the Working Committee headed by Celia Guillermo the President joined by fellow Officers and some volunteers including Lourdes Blinco, Violie Leslie, Leah and Allan Calilung, Luzcel Camacho, Miriam Cocking, Neneng Cossid-Short, Benjie de Guzman, Rose Howland, Bing Lacsamana-Lien, Juan Paolo Legaspi, Rommel Olson, Joan Soliven, Ester Wenzel, Roger Domingo, Xandra Glare Cariño, Elmer Hombre and Corina Van Elsen.
Cielo Juanta Mercado closely supervised the training and dance rehearsals of my grandchildren Amanda, Serena, Veronica and Luis Juanta Razon; Celeste, Alonzo and Celena Juanta Mercado; Isabel and Jessica Juanta Cruz. They performed two traditional Filipino folkdances “Subli” and“Tinikling” dressed in butterfly-sleeved and brightly colored long balintawak costumes designed by Lola Cora Juanta; the boys were in kundiman pants and shirt. Grace and astonishing precision in movements absolutely delighted the audience.
Gabriella Maglahus and Rois Rendon presented a special dance number. Lourdes Blinco and Ben-Hur Winter presented a movement drama about the agony of leaving the motherland. Donned with fine Maria Clara costumes, dancers from the Samahan Filipino-Australian SA Inc. presented two other delightful Filipino folkdances with Hispanic influence “Habanera de Jovencita” and “Aray”. Lourdes Blinco, Celia Guillermo, Violie Leslie, Roger Domingo, Rommel Olson and Ben-Hur Winter performed“Singkil” and “Tango Fusion” . Jonathan Fortu rendered the song“Handog” with much feeling.
The big highlight of the evening came when dancing pairs Violie Leslie and Roger Domingo and Celia Guillermo and Rommel Olson took the center stage in turns. Dressed up in exquisite tailored costumes they performed in the most elegant manner two well-choreographed contemporary dances “Sampaguita” and“Basta’t Mahal Kita” that earned raves and applause from the audience. International professional dance teacher Rommel Olson skillfully choreographed both dances including the elegant “Singkil” and “Tango Fusion”.
Benjamin (Butch) Juanta Jr. sang his new composition “ERPI 40th Anniversary Song”. Ten years ago Butch wrote and sang an early composition “Tatlumpung Taong Radyo Pilipino” , a tribute to the 30th Anniversary Celebration of Ethnic Radyo Pilipino Incorporated in 2008.
The Executive Committee surprised Amy Bartjes, Ramon Cruz and me with engraved Glass Awards . Ramon recognized as Founding Member , Amy for Distinguished Service , and Distinguished Leadership Award for me. Also, Ely Quinto who is known for his poetic prowess in Filipino composed some verses of endearment about Amy and of me as tribute to our person and to the service we do for years in and for the Filipino community.
And so, with the combined talents, hard work, commitment, professionalism and leadership of Lourdes Blinco being program director, Rommel Olson as floor director/dance choreographer and Celia Guillermo as over-all program coordinator assisted by Violie Leslie, RADYO PILIPINO 40th Anniversary Celebration was steered joyously to resounding success! ©rdgjuantaNovember2018
