Rooty Hill-October 13: The Association of Golden Australian Pilipinos Inc (AGAPI) marked this year’s United Nations Day 13 Oct., ensuring that venue Rooty Hill School of Arts came alive with colour, music, and laughter reminiscent of the UN’s diversity.
United Nations Day enshrines the anniversary when the UN Charter came into force on 24 October 1945 after its ratification by the majority of signatories, including the five permanent members of the UN Security Council – China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America.
The day has been observed each year on 24 October since 1948, with the UN General Assembly also recommending in 1971 that member states declare it a public holiday.
Although commemorative activities are held to celebrate United Nations Day, 24 Oct is not a public holiday in the Philippines or in Australia.
AGAPI president Dorothy del Villar said that “United Nations Day reminds us to be united and live in peace and harmony.”
On the day, AGAPI members donned costumes of several UN member countries, with three selected as being the most representative – Nanita Hidalgo (United Kingdom), Dorothy del Villar (Spain) and Francisca Magsalin (Philippines).
October-born members – Brenda Dela Sala, Thelma Junio, Caridad Morabe, Maxwell Pontenila, Adelfa Woodforde – were feted with a joint cake, greetings, and hugs. – ends (Photos by Evelyn A. Opilas)
