The rate of unemployment in the Cumberland local government area is one of the highest in NSW. Unemployment has long term devastating effects on the person’s physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, self-respect, ability to form social networks and participate productively in society.
For this reason, ASCON decided to focus on providing much needed assistance to jobseekers struggling to secure sustainable employment, through its Connect to Work project. This one-on-one assistance and mentoring coupled with group training workshops started in 2015. It covers a wide variety of employment preparation skills. Through the generous funding by DOOLEYS Lidcombe Catholic Club, this program has been running for four years and has made positive impacts on the lives of residents in the Cumberland LGA who have successfully secured sustainable employment. It has also paved the way for pathways to further education and training for others.
ASCON is a network of 49 small and emerging community organisations that started in Auburn. This year’s $77, 300 funding grant is earmarked for delivering free employment services for one year in Wentworthville, Merrylands and Auburn.
