Pinay Spikers: Champions of 2019 Migrante BC’s Summer Volleyball

Congratulations to Team Pinay Spikers who brought home the 2019 Championship Trophy at the Eighth Migrante BC Volleyball Tournament held at Collingwood Park  last August 24. Each player of the team also received a Championship Medal.

The First Place Trophy went to Team TAC-U and the Second Place Trophy to Team Phil-BC. 

The Most Valuable Player Trophy was awarded to Aika Billena of Team Pinay Spikers.

Migrante BC successfully hosted and organized the summer Volleyball games with the Sports and Recreation Committee in the lead. The Committee took care of the planning, recruitment and delivery of the summer volleyball program, and highlighted the goals of promoting sportsmanship, community building and wellness.

The other participating women’s teams showed their mastery of volleyball in the great spirit of sportsmanship: Migrante BC, Balibolista, BC Dragons, Blue Warriors, Cool Raiders, JPV,  JPV-FFF, and Supremes.

Migrante BC runs on volunteer power and extends its thanks to the 2019 Volleyball Committee: Inday Lara, Kyle Oropel, Kimmy Caacbay, Catherine Magday, Nieann Amante and Jane Ordinario and Jon Carolino.

The Set-up Committee and Info Table were the first volunteers in the Park and made sure everything was ready to go: Jane Ordinario, Bert Monterona, Bong Ordinario, Mylene Maranoc, Joiden Ordinario, Leo Alejandria, Liezel Ocampo and Chris Sorio.

The referees who kept order in the courts were: Fred Caacbay, Melchor Sumang, Albert Lopez, Ramon Mitra, Teddy Oropel, and Sean Oropel.

Volunteer scorers who tracked the number of  wins and losses were Chile Alvarez, Krizzie Caacbay, Janelle Sobredo, John Oropel and Xander Duremdes. Line persons who helped out were Belen Vasquez, Maylene Maranoc, Leandro Mitra, Reggie Gamboa, Abella Morales, Rainier Ordinario, Nancy Gayongala and Erie Maestro.

Food Committee lead persons Aileen Villeta and Marino Morales kept volunteers fed and hydrated. First Aider Vivien Oropel kept the ice packs ready at all times. Mateo Miranda, Ewen MacArthur and Inday Lara took photos.

Banners of Belonging Project - interactive painting project


Migrante BC gathered a diverse and inter-generational mix of members, volunteers and their families for the games. Bert Monterona and Mylene Maranoc brought  the Banners of Belonging Project to the Park for an interactive painting activity. The young people of Sulong UBC joined Migrante BC and went around to the different tents to introduce Sulong UBC to the different teams and their supporters.

 Successful entrepreneur Joyce Lovitos Markham sponsored this year’s sports trophies and medals.

Migrante BC is a grassroots organization working to protect and promote the rights and welfare of Filipino migrant workers and immigrants. Last July 12, 2019, Migrante BC received the City of Vancouver’s  Excellence Award for Diversity and Inclusion.###
