And so, the story continues ….
1969 – Kruitberg Group 50 years Ago in the Netherlands
The first reunion of 20 years was in 1992. Followed with a 35 Year Reunion in 2004.
After the celebration in September 2018 of the 49 years reunion in Honolulu, Hawaii, this year was time for the actual 50-year Reunion Celebration.
1992 - 20 Year Reunion – Winnipeg
2004 –35 Year Reunion – Vancouver
Thanks to Social Media we were able to contact a lot more members and everything was planned for the weekend of August 3, 4, and 5th, 2019.
2018 – 49 Year Reunion – Honolulu
In Winnipeg we were expecting 22 Out of Town Kruitberg members and they arrived with their partners, friends, etc. July 30 was the first day some arrived and with the majority of them arriving August 1 and 2nd, everyone in Winnipeg was getting excited. Just imagine some had not seen each other since they left Amsterdam back in 1972.
2019 – 50-year Reunion – Winnipeg
Over the years we have all grown older and hope wiser and we all had our up and downs and health issued, but we all came through it and hopefully we will all still grow a lot older. Personality’s may have changed over the years because of the life lessons we had to endure. But deep inside we were all still the same person you worked with and lived with for 3 years in Holland. And this was proven the night of our dinner on August 3rd. Hugging, crying, not remembering faces or names, not recognizing who was who and so the night began. An unbelievable evening of singing, dancing, recalling those days, lots and lots of pictures and those that were present of each flat number in the Kruitberg said a few words. Some flats had only one-member present but others had 3, 4, 5 members and even one complete flat of 7 members was present.
Ms. Catalan the Social worker during the time in Amsterdam was not able to attend the reunion due to health issued but as a surprise to the group I was also able to obtain a message from her which was read during our dinner. The room was beautifully set up all with the gold color in mind to emphasize the 50 years. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond their control two members from Toronto were not able to make it at the last minute due their flight being cancelled and not able to fly again until Monday.
August 4th, 2019 – Picnic
We were so sorry to hear this and feeling bad for them, because Fe Tabios and Laring Maghacot were so looking forward to this reunion. Marita Mier from the USA was also delayed by one day due to a severe flu she had. But she made it for the picnic and all other festivities. There were Kruitberg members from Winnipeg, Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Regina, Calgary and the United States. All in all, we ended up celebrating with 41 Kruitberg members and their partners, family and friends. The best turnout there ever was.
The following day on August 4th, the celebration continued with a picnic in the park. The weather cooperated and again the group spend the day together. Mellie Maglangue, accompanied by her family also made a short visit to the park. Needless to say, there was lots of food and again lots of picture taking.
You would figure after two days of celebrating it would be over but it wasn’t.
Monday, we had the Birthday celebration of Fronie Adriosula which was held at her son’s restaurant “Charlee’s” in Winnipeg. Her son had closed the restaurant for this private function. Besides celebrating Fronie her birthday, we also celebrated all the August Birthdays. Would you believe that they are eleven Kruitberg members that have a birthday in August? As another surprise to the group I was also able to obtain a short video message from Ms. Catalan with a personal message to the Kruitberg members which was played at the Birthday luncheon. I’m sure that some had a few tears while listening and looking at the video.
August Birthday Celebrants
Some of the members had to leave Winnipeg already late Monday, some left Tuesday and so on, but for those members that were still here we had a pot luck gathering at Nene Dandan her place on Wednesday. This is a tradition the Winnipeg Kruitberg members do any time there is a out of town Kruitberg member visiting Winnipeg.
But that was not the end of it, because Thursday was Auring Lozaga-Pacle her birthday and again the group was together at her place.
This was the last night that the group was together and at the end of the evening it was time to say Goodbye to each other.
With the last out of town members leaving Friday, Saturday and Sunday and the very last one on Tuesday the 13th the celebration was over.
We don’t know if there will be another reunion and at the ages we are today, we don’t know how many of us will still be around and/or able to attend.
I hope that everyone made new memories, had a fantastic time, lots of fun and who knows, we may see each other again.
The plant has been seeded for a possible reunion again in 2022. The Floriade 2022 will be that year in Amsterdam, which by coincidence will also be 50 years since the Kruitberg Group left Amsterdam in 1972.
Amsterdam be ready, they may be back!!!!!!
