Association of Golden Australian Pilipinos Inc members were among devotees who marked the feast day of St Pedro Calungsod, remembering that the Philippines’ second saint also died a martyr spreading the Gospel.
Attired in red T-shirts, the Saint’s followers celebrated the day with Mass at St Aidan’s Church Rooty Hill and with fellowship at the St Mary MacKillop Hall 13 April.
AGAPI’s Max and Emma Pontenilla were among the novena sponsors actively promoting devotion to the young Filipino martyr.
“We support devotion to St Peter Calungsod because he is an inspiration to Visayans like us,” the couple said.
“At a young age, he showed exemplary commitment to Christ’s teachings and his Catholic Faith,” they added.
According to Wikipedia, St Pedro Calungsod was formally on March 5, 2000, by Pope John Paul II and officially canonized by Pope Benedict XVI at in Vatican City on October 21, 2012.St Pedro Calungsod is shown to be wearing a white camisa (shirt) and trousers, with his characteristic palm, a rosary, and a crucifix pressed to his breast.
“Saint Pedro Calungsod… also known as Peter Calungsod and Pedro Calonsor, was a Roman Catholic migrant, sacristan and who, along with the Spanish Diego Luis de San Vitores, suffered religious persecution and martyrdom in for their missionary work in 1672.
“While in , Calungsod preached Christianity to the Chamorro people through catechism, while baptizing infants, children and adults at the risk and expense of being persecuted and eventually murdered. Through Calungsod and ' missionary efforts, many native Chamorros converted to .”
The Philippines’ first saint is St Lorenzo Ruiz who was martyred in Japan along with other missionaries.
