Adrian Milford originally from Samoa and now lives in Preston, New South Wales, won the 24th PAL Kalayaan cup golf tournament held at Twin Creeks Golf & Country Club on June 10, 2019, to celebrate the 121st year of the proclamation of Philippine Independence and organised by Kalayaan, Inc headed by Bob Leones.
He scored unbeatable 47 points under the stableford scoring system using his handicap of 20 with Sydney Eagles Social golf club. He was awarded with the crystal glass championship trophy, economy class return airfare to Manila courtesy of Philippine Airlines and the privilege to engrave his name in the perpetual trophy. “I can’t believe; I did not expect to win this event which I joined for the first time. My appreciation to the organiser for a very professional and successful way of running the event” said Adrian Milford with pride.
Division winners were: James Milford for A with score of 46 stableford points using his social handicap of 14; Roy Velasco for B with score of 41 points using his handicap of 23 with Tee-reffic Berdies/Puro Golf club; Rudy Neri for C with score of 43 points using his handicap of 32 with Sydney Metro Social golf club and Kate Andres for Ladies with score of 23 points (CB) using her handicap of 38 from Sydney Metro Social golf club. These division winners received $300 cash prize and crystal glass trophies for their exceptional efforts.
Division runners up were: Felise Leaaetoa for A with score of 43 points using his AGU handicap of 9; Daven Naidu for B with score of 40 points using his handicap of 20 with Sydney Metro Social golf club; Jerry Valmeo for C with score of 42 points using his social handicap of 27 and Lydia Moles for Ladies with score of 23 points (CB) using her AGU handicap of 23. These division runners up winners received $150 cash prize and crystal glass trophies.
Novelty prize winners of $20 each in Divisions A, B & C for all holes of either longest drive, nearest the pins and best drive & pitch were also awarded.
Before the awards presentation, Bob Leones, the President of the Kalayaan, Inc. welcomed all the participants and acknowledged the presence and support of various social golf clubs and groups. He recognised the presence of the first timers and encouraged them to come back again next year. He also acknowledged the valuable support of all sponsors namely Philippine Airlines, R.O. Biala, Myrons’ Stars, Property Investors Alliance, Westpac LitePay and the various hole sponsors. Finally, he introduced the Honourable Consul General Maria Teresa L. Taguiang.
In her National Day message, the Philippine Consul General Maria Teresa L. Taguiang congratulated the Kalayaan Organising Committee headed by Bob Leones for job well done in successfully organising the 24th PAL Kalayaan cup golf tournament. She also mentioned the current theme of Kalayaan 2019 “Tapang ng Bayan, Malasakit sa Mamamayan”. She congratulated the winners and wished all the participants to come back again next year. Finally, she praised the Kalayaan Organising Committee and wished them more success in the future.
Major Sponsors aside from Philippine Airlines are R.O. Biala Pty Ltd, Myrons’ Stars, Property Investors Alliance and Andre Automotive. This writer who has coordinated this tournament for 18 years in the past and currently the coordinator for the annual FilAussie Interstate Friendship golf cup in Manila for the past 15 years, donated $550 voucher for the registration fee of the 26th series in March 2020 as a raffle prize.

The Kalayaan Organising Committee which was formed in early 2016 has the responsibility of organising, promoting and maintaining the annual PAL Kalayaan Cup golf tournament in conjunction with the celebration of the proclamation of Philippine Independence. All members are volunteers and are assigned in different tasks. In May 2018 the committee was incorporated into Kalayaan, Inc and Bob Leones was elected as the founding President.
The PAL Kalayaan cup golf tournament is now the longest running and well attended golf tournament in the Filipino-Australian golfing community in New South Wales, Australia. One of its objectives is to raise funds to be donated to the Missionaries of Charity in Tondo, Manila. This golf tournament is also the way of paying tribute to the Filipino forebears who fought for the freedom enjoyed by all Filipinos today.
