Annual Concert of Philippine Dances and Music Continues to Honor Founders Legacy on October 27 and 28, 2012 at the Joan Kroc Theater in San Diego

The Samahan Filipino American Performing Arts and Education Center will present their 38th Annual Concert of Philippine Dances and Music at the Joan B. Kroc Theater, 6611 University Avenue, San Diego on October 27, 2012 at 8 p.m., Saturday, and October 28 at 2 p.m., Sunday.



The Concert is dedicated in honor of Dr. Lolita Dioso Carter, SAMAHANs Founder and Executive Director, who passed away on July 25, 2011.

The two-hour program of popular Filipino folk dances choreographed for theater performance by Artistic Director, Ruby Pearl B. Chiong, will showcase SAMAHAN's rich repertoire in vivid and colorful costumes.Samahans alumni and UC Irvine dance graduate, Michelle Aguilar Camaya, has been invited to lend her experience in Broadway theater performances.



Bob Schroeder, the foremost Filipino American flutist and conductor of the Filipino American Symphony Orchestra (FASO), performs a number of favorite Filipino songs, highlighting the Concert.

Other guest vocalists are Mary Paz Vigo, Beth Torres and the Nostalgia Singers composed of Lilli Guenthoer, Jescel Esteban, Rose San Pedro and Tess Rivero.

Elegant Maria Clara and exhilarating rural dances are performed with the lively music of the Samahan Rondalla under the direction of Frederick Embalsado, promising an enjoyable evening. In the rural suite, the ever popular Binasuan which SAMAHAN dancers perform with skill and joy, end with a fast paced, very creative version of the Tinikling.


The BIBAK San Diego youth group will be presenting ethnic dances and music as traditionally performed by their ancestors in the Cordilleras in the Northern Philippines, such as, Ballang-bang, An-aninit and Salisid.

Southern Philippine tribal dances are all performed with live music accompaniment by theSamahan Kulintang Ensemble also known as the Pakaraguian Kulintang Ensemble. The ensemble is one of the very few kulintang ensembles that play the authentic music of the Maguindanao, Maranao, Tausog and Sama tribes of Mindanao in the U.S.

Most of the current members of the kulintang ensemble studied Maguindanao and Maranao music underDanongan Sibay Kalanduyan, Master Artist/Teacher of Kulintang Music and Bernard Ellorin, UCLA Ethnomusicology graduate and co-founder of the Pakaraguian Kulintang Ensemble.

The general public is invited to witness the special presentation by the SAMAHAN performers as a tribute to the magnificent legacy of Philippine culture and tradition bestowed by the late Dr. Lolita Dioso Carter to the Filipino American youth of San Diego. General admission is $15, students with ID and seniors 60/over years old is $12. Tickets will be available at the door. Group rate is available to group of at least 10 (needs to be prepaid).
