STCQC Golden Jubilee

Lost sleep posed no bar for the ‘Gels’, Theresians seemingly curious about the recent first mini-reunion of their classmates in Manila in the lead up to their 2020 Golden Jubilee at St Theresa’s College Quezon City.
The ‘Gels’ comprise STC QC alumnae who completed their four-year college degrees in 1970, the very first batch to graduate after the college department was transferred from San Marcelino St., Manila to D. Tuazon Ave., Quezon City in 1966.
Affectionately calling each other ‘Gels’, a term their late maths professor Noemi Zamora used for her students, Class C’70 will be honoured at the homecoming 25 January 2020 and have been encouraging classmates the world over to be present.
Their chat group on Viber ran hot into the night, with many readjusting their time zones to be updated on future mini-reunions, homecoming plans, confirming ‘friend’ requests on facebook, demonstrating how tech savvy they had become.
I should know – with daylight saving time still in force then, I was awake ‘til 4am Sydney time, unable (rather, not wishing) to control the ping on my mobile phone.
Former classmate Cori Anareta-Formoso in the U.S. seemed to have fared better. “I fell asleep in spite of your ruckus (phone kept vibrating),” she texted with feigned annoyance.
Thirteen ‘Gels’ – Carmelita Borja-de Jesus, Fami Catolico-Leyba, Teena Feliciano-del Rosario, Celia Guevara-Lazaro, Chona Juan-Tan, Gigi Katigbak-de la Cruz, Nani Lagman-Reyes, Ophie Manalac-Dee, Pinky Marcos-Osias, Isabelita Puzon, Macky Razon, Brenda Reyes-Cancio, Belle Romero-Bondoc – attended the mini-reunion at Conti’s in Mandaluyong, with Planning Committee member Nani footing the bill in what was agreed to be a KKB affair (kanya-kanyang bayad or Dutch treat).
Online kudos on their classmate’s generosity seemed embarrassingly endless, prompting Nani to describe her gesture in a way seniors could relate to, understand, and chuckle about: “… it wasn’t too much for the pocket because they ordered halo-halo mini only (no sugar – bawal/ little milk lang/ no beans (mataas uric) and sana no ice (tagal pa ng ubo). Pancit sotanghon mini din pls… no pork (hi blood) no patis (blocked arteries) lots of bawang pls bec it’s so so healthy and pls squeeze my garlic oil gel too that I keep in my purse para healthier… No soft drinks (hi sugar) water only pero warm to very warm… and cake one slice with 6 forks share share kami… and waiter here’s our senior cards.”
Catching up, giggling, texting well into the night among seniors who happen to have been classmates indeed have their share of merit lol.
