14 OUTSTANDING FILCAN GRADUATES RECEIVE FILIPINO CENTRE TORONTO AWARDS

Toronto-October 28: Purposefully aimed at honouring and recognizing top performing Filipino Canadian students, the Filipino Centre Toronto - FCT, a non profit, volunteer run and service- oriented community entity in the Filipino Canadian community in Ontario held its 12th Annual Outstanding Students Awards-OSA on October 28, 2018, Sunday, 2:00 pm. at the FCT Social Hall, 4395 Sheppard Avenue East, Scarborough, Toronto.

 The FCT presented awards to 14 top elementary, secondary and post-secondary school graduates. The program, a scholastic competition since 2005, known as the "Rosalinda C. Javier Outstanding Students Awards"-RCJOSA in honour of the late Rosalinda C. Javier, erstwhile long-serving FCT President and CEO. It was established to encourage Filipino Canadian students to perform successfully in their academic studies. Specifically, FCT honours the student graduates who have achieved academic excellence and student success with plaques of recognition and cash awards.

Among those who were given recognition with distinctive plaques and cash awards were: A."Outstanding Elementary School Graduates": Jason Bouckley, Dannuel Matthew Santos and Kyla Marie Supat; B. "Outstanding High School Graduates" : Elyka Anne Ampioco, Jasmine Bouckley, Krista Elisha Salazar Chavez, Hannah Clemente ,Katelyn Quiachon,& Alfonso Ralph Mendoza Manalo; C. Outstanding Post Secondary Graduates: Mary Ann Gaytano - Santos and Charles Brian Racelis Serapio . Adjudged "Most Outstanding Elementary School Graduate" was Maelynn Magnolia Hechanova Bucao;  "Most Outstanding High School  Graduate" was  Nikki Brianne Francisco Samonte; and  "Most Outstanding Post Secondary School Graduate" was Dr. Marisa Largo, PhD. All the awardees have successfully passed the selection process by satisfactorily meeting the evaluative criteria of: academic average ( 50%), co-curricular activities( 15%), community involvement( 15%) and interview performance (20%).

Two former members of the FCT Board of Directors also received special awards and tributes during the ceremony. The late Rosalinda C. Javier, a former school teacher, community leader and former FCT President & CEO was given a Posthumous Award with a Plaque of Recognition. Aida D'Orazio, a former FCT Director and the Chairman of the FCT -OSA Project in 2005- 2013, also was cited for her exemplary service and contribution to the Centre. Dr. Vicky Santiago, former FCT Board Chair presented the awards, assisted by FCT President & CEO Mary Ann San Juan.

 

In attendance were the officers and members of the FCT Board of Directors, special guests, parents and family members of the honourees. The Guest speaker was Liberal Member of Parliament for Scarborough North Shaun Chen who congratulated and at the same time challenged the 14 awardees to become "role models and trail blazers in their future careers and communities". 4 Liberal Members of Parliament Gary Anandasangaree, Michael Levitt, Marco Mendicino & Salma Zahid and Member of Provincial Parliament Mitzie Hunter & TCDSB Trustee Garry Tanuan also graced the event.Tess Lumanlan, FCT Vice President, hosted the program with FCT Director Wendy Arena giving the invocation, FCT President and CEO Mary Ann San Juan welcomed the guests and FCT Board Chairman closed the afternoon's program. Miss Rachel Andal provided entertainment playing the piano.
