The Alliance of Philippine Community Organisations Inc (APCO) is one of the member organisations of the multicultural Auburn Small Community Organisation Network (ASCON) that participated in hosting the annual Refugee Camp in My Neighbourhood that ASCON and the Cumberland Council organise to promote the causes of refugees and asylum-seekers.
Held at the Auburn Centre for Community and Auburn Park located at Macquarie Road and Hutchinson Street, AUBURN, this event had been expanded as a Celebration in My Neighbourhood and was held last Saturday, 4 August 2018. Five of ASCON’s organisational members, namely: Alliance of Philippine Community Organisations Inc (APCO), Sri Om Foundation, Bosnian Disability and Seniors Association, Auburn Tamil Society and Somali Welfare Cultural Association, and other organisations like DOOLEYS, RACS, NSW Government, SPARK, NSW Refugee Health Service, St Vincent de Paul Society, NSW Support Services, STARTTS and Welcome Studio were involved.
For its contribution, APCO will be selling Philippine favourite food and conducting a workshop on how to dance Tinikling to multicultural guests.
Dr Cen Amores is the current President of ASCON and founding President of APCO. ASCON is an aggrupation of more than 40 CALD community organisations representing the various small and emerging communities of Cumberland LGA. The Kapitbahayan Coop which started its first housing clusters in Auburn in 1997, was also a founding member of ASCON with Ruben Amores elected as its first President in 2007.
ASCON aims to provide opportunities for harmonious engagement and collaboration among all the ethnic groups. Among the successful projects of ASCON are: Flavours of Auburn traditional food festival, food tours, cooking classes and healthy traditional food book; various employment and job-seeking training and mentoring; organisational skills training; youth holiday activities; community volunteering; advocating for the rights and welfare of newly arrived migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers; supporting and encouraging for more inter-faith, inter-generational and other multicultural and social development projects and activities of its member-organisations as well as actively engaging with local council and other bodies in behalf of the ordinary residents of Cumberland LGA.
