Baritone Fernando said the past year was a big year for him professionally. It was a year of faith and courage. Memorable musical highlights were my debut with Aula Simfonia doing the Faure Requiem. The year 2011 is already a great year in my career. I just finished two major performances -- my return to Auala Simfonia Jakarta where I sang the bass solo in The Messiah and recently I just essayed the role of Alfio in Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana as part of the UST 400th Anniversary.
The baritone is scheduled to sing the bass solo part in Verdi's Requiem with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra under the batone of Maestro Olivier Ochanine after which he returns to Long Beach Opera in California to sing Sasha in Shostakovich's Moscow Cherry Town.
The first Filipino first prize winner of the prestigious Loren L. Zachary National Vocal Competition in the United States and an alumnus of the world renowned San Francisco Opera Merola Program., Fernando is also a prize winner in the Metropolitan Opera National Auditions in the Los Angeles district and in the Pacific region, The Palm Springs Opera Vocal Competition, a recipient of the Opera Buffs Inc. scholarship grant and the Grand Prize winner in the Pasedena Opera Guild Vocal competition in 2004 and a grand finalist in the Licia Albanese Puccini International Vocal Competition held in New York in 2003. He was Opera Pacifics resident baritone from 1999-2002 where he worked constantly with internationally acclaimed conductor John De Main.
Singing the title role of Verdis Rigoletto in Opera San Jose in California, opera critic Scott McClelland wrote: "Making his company debut in the title role, Andrew Fernando gave a powerful performance, physically stooped and dragging, intensely driven and deeply suffering. The Philippines native obviously knew this role well and has scored an impression rsum with opera companies in Asia and California. His dynamic range was well and expressively displayed in solos and ensembles."
Fernandos March 13 program includes Mozarts Se vuol ballare (from Le Nozze di Figaro), Donizettis Bella siccome un'angelo (from Don Pasquale), Kennst du das land (from Little Women), Being Alive, Some Enchanted Evening and Impossible Dream, among others.
Tickets at P1500 each with dinner. Please call tel. 7484152 or 09065104270. Kiss the Cook Gourmet is located at 65 Maginhawa St., UP Village, Quezon City.
