Filipinos join Sydney Alliance to lower electricity bill

Community leaders from APCO Inc, Kapitbahayan Coop, Parramatta Catholic Diocese and a number of universities joined some 150 community and religious leaders, academics, energy experts and supporters at the Voices for Power Conference, held at the Australian Catholic University in Strathfield organised by Sydney Alliance, a broad coalition of the state’s civil society.

Among the Filipino conference participants were APCO President Violeta Escultura, retired UP Professor Ed Escultura, ASCON president Dr Cen Amores, Kapitbahayan Coop President Pablo Lee, KCL Property Manager Ani Son, APCO adviser Ruben Amores and Carmen Frazer.

The conference was focused on finding consumer and community-based solutions to the high cost of energy and the potential for emerging renewable technology, energy efficiency incentives, housing policy and community organizing support to low income communities.

It is envisioned that through the Voices for Power Project, ethnically and culturally diverse leaders take the lead in finding solutions to the problems confronting their communities.

Kapitbahayan Coop through property manager Ani Son presented a testimony citing a radical lowering of electrical bills at its Canley Vale properties due to the installation of solar panels.

According to Sydney Alliance community liaison Aloy Canete, “As our communities are dealing with the pressures of rising energy prices and the effects of climate change, we are stepping up our efforts of community organising to meet those challenges”. Aloy, a professor from the Visayas is calling on all Filipino-Australian community organisations to speak out and demand the government to tackle the rising electricity prices.

ASCON and APCO co-host Multicultural Celebration in Auburn

The Auburn Centre for Community located at 44a Macquarie Road, AUBURN will be the venue of a mini-festival called Celebration in My Neighbourhood on Saturday, 4 August 2018 from 10 am – 4 pm.

Multicultural communities that are members of ASCON are heavily involved in the upcoming Celebration in My Neighbourhood event.


Organised By the Cumberland Council in partnership with Auburn Small Community Organisation Network Inc (ASCON), DOOLEYS, RACS, NSW Government, SPARK, NSW Refugee Health Service, St Vincent de Paul Society, NSW Support Services, STARTTS and Welcome Studio, the mini festival will be jointly hosted by the local multicultural groups.

ASCON, with five of its organisational members, namely: Alliance of Philippine Community Organisations Inc (APCO), Sri Om Foundation, Bosnian Disability and Seniors Association, Auburn Tamil Society and Somali Welfare Cultural Association, will join eleven other local multicultural associations in the provision of food stalls and interactive activities.

For its contribution, APCO will be selling Philippine favourite food and conducting a workshop on how to dance Tinikling to multicultural guests.

Dr Cen Amores is the current President of ASCON and founding President of APCO. ASCON is an aggrupation of more than 40 CALD community organisations representing the various small and emerging communities of Cumberland LGA. The Kapitbahayan Coop which has its first housing clusters in Auburn in 1997, was also a founding member of ASCON with Ruben Amores elected first ASCON President during its foundation in 2007.

ASCON aims to provide opportunities for harmonious engagement and collaboration among all the ethnic groups. Among the successful projects of ASCON are: Flavours of Auburn traditional food festival, food tours, cooking classes and healthy traditional food book; various employment and job-seeking training and mentoring; organisational skills training; youth holiday activities; community volunteering; advocating for the rights and welfare of newly-arrived migrants, refugees and asylum-seekers, supporting and encouraging for more inter-faith, inter-generational and other multicultural and social development projects and activities of its member-organisations as well as actively engaging with local council and other bodies in behalf of the ordinary people.
