Rowena Romulo’s restaurant also named second ‘Most Loved Local Restaurant’ in all of London.

(London, May 2018) Romulo Café London retained the title of ‘Most Loved Local Restaurant’ in Kensington in the recently announced 2018 Time Out Love London Awards backed by the Mayor of London.

Having dialled up the capital’s appetite for Filipino food, ex-banker Rowena Romulo’s restaurant went even further, emerging overall runner-up in the public vote covering all 101 London neighbourhoods, including Westminster, Covent Garden, Mayfair, Shoreditch and Peckham.

Romulo Café London, which showcases heirloom recipes alongside the Romulo family’s take on traditional Philippine dishes, also won two other award categories: ‘Most Loved Local Coffee Place’ and ‘Most Loved Brunch Spot’ in Kensington.

A district within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, Romulo Café’s patch is a well-heeled residential and commercial zone, home to a significant number of established Filipino businesses. The restaurant is only minutes away from Olympia London exhibition centre, the Design Museum and Kensington Palace.

Rowena Romulo said, ‘When we won the Time Out Most Loved Restaurant in Kensington award in 2016, I knew we had to work hard to prove we deserved to win again. The competition didn’t take place last year, but we were named one of Time Out’s Recommended Restaurants. Those are restaurants given 4 or 5 star reviews by Time Out’s editors.

‘I really love how Filipinos have taken Romulo Café London to their hearts. My whole team, including my partners here, Chris Joseph and Gina Consing McAdam, my Restaurant Manager, Trinidad French, and our new Executive Chef, Jeremy Villanueva, owe a lot to their loyalty and goodwill. We’ll be launching a new menu soon, so watch this space!’

Chris Joseph, who before co-founding Romulo Café London with Rowena led franchise operations for Domino’s in the Middle East, said, ‘There are tens of thousands of restaurants and food service outlets in London. This is a great honour for us to be runner-up Most Loved Local restaurant. There’s no doubt London is becoming a hotbed for Filipino food. Even Meghan Markle named adobo as one of her favourite dishes. Our aim is to help make fine Filipino food in Britain as celebrated as the best of Thai, Malaysian, and Vietnamese cuisine. With luck, hard work, and continued support, we will get there.’

Jovan Masilungan of coffee company Barako Bean, which created the General’s Blend exclusively for Romulo Café London said, ‘We’re extremely happy for Rowena, Chris and the Romulo team. To be named Time Out Most Loved Coffee Place in Kensington is evidence that “Pinoy” food-and-drink is on the rise and here to stay. Romulo Café London is at the pinnacle of fine Filipino food, and we were right to make it our goal to be their coffee supplier from day one.’
