Toronto Filipino Canadians Are Gearing Up for Community-Wide Events in June

Generally, the June celebrations as usual will certainly focus on common themes and emphases covering the traditional fiestas, beauty & talent pageants, parades & processions, park picnics, cultural presentations, educational workshops and other salient gatherings. June 12 has many major activities lined up that Filipinos have to plan out their " participation itinerary". Although a working day, June 12 is the actual commemoration of the 120th anniversary of the Philippines "Araw ng Kalayaan" .

Commencing on June 2, Saturday, at 1:00 -4:00 pm , Toronto Councillor Neethan Shan and the Filipino Heritage Month Council - FHMC will hold a "Filipino Heritage Month Opening Reception" at the Toronto - Malvern Public Library, 30 Sewells Road, Scarborough, Toronto. An RSVP is requested. Refreshments will be served.



On June 9 the "Proudly Pinoy Day" is happening at Francis Libermann Catholic High School from 9:00 am. to 3:00 pm. at 4640 Finch Avenue East, Scarborough, Toronto, Ontario. The 11th yearly event is organized and sponsored by the Toronto Catholic District School Board Asian Heritage Month Committee, the Community Relations Department and the host High School in partnership with 14 other civic organizations and entities. It is offering a 3- part whole day program involving cultural & talent-based musical presentations and workshops for students, parents & adults .



A community leaders forum on "Community Building and Civic Engagement" is also scheduled. Invited to make inspiring presentations are students & youth leaders, model professionals, and prominent civic & community leaders. Exhibits and show-and-tell educational materials are available. Also, a complimentary meal will be served and child- minding assistance is in place.

With its theme "Kalayaan 2018: Pagbabagong Ipinaglaban Alay sa Masaganang Kinabukasan" ( Independence 2018: Changes for a Progressive Future), the Philippine Consulate General-Toronto is holding the traditional Philippine Independence Day celebration at the Consulate Offices on Tuesday, 9:00 a.m., 7th floor, 160 Eglinton Avenue East, Toronto. Invited guests will be listening to messages from Philippine government officials and other dignitaries and treated to a breakfast of popular Filipino delicacies .

On the same day, at 12:00 noon, the rebounding Federation of Filipino Canadians -Ontario, led by Michele Serrano and her mother, Monina Lim-Serrano is prepared to resume the yearly Philippine flag-raising rites at the Ontario Legislative Assembly, Queen's Park. Guests are requested to a "Pre-Registration" requirement, at least 4 days before June 12th. The 2- part program consists of flag-raising and messages by invited government and political dignitaries on the south side grounds of Queen's Park and a complimentary lunch gathering inside the legislative building.

The Toronto Catholic District School Board, will have its inaugural celebration of its recently proclaimed June Filipino Heritage Month and June 12 Filipino Heritage Day in all Catholic schools in Toronto. The event is from 12:00 -3:00 pm. at the Catholic Education Centre, 80 Sheppard Avenue, North York, Toronto in partnership with the Filipino Heritage Month Council- FHMC. Also from June 12 to 17, 2018, the Filipino Heritage Month Council -FHMC will put up an "Filipino Heritage Month Cultural Exhibits" in respect of its "Pamana" theme at the Scarborough Civic Centre Rotunda.

Other community-wide events include the following: June 16th - GTAHoops "Palaro sa Kabataan" Invitational Basketball Tourney at Downsview HoopDome; Philippine Canadian Cultural Foundation Pinoy Fiesta & Trade Show at Metro Convention Centre; June 16th & 17th - Filipino Centre Toronto "Pistahan sa Toronto" at Nathan Phillips Square, City Hall; June 17th --the Philippine Independence Day Council Salosalo Picnic, is still being arranged; June 19th (Tuesday at 4:00 pm.) KOR- Knights of Rizal "Rizal Birth Anniversary & Wreath Laying" Event, Earl Bales Park, Bathurst St., North York; June 23rd (1:30- 3:30 pm.)--Heritage Toronto-organized " Little Manila Walking Tour", 3749 Bathurst Road Parkette, North York ($10 donation) ; June 23rd ( Sat. 1- 3pm.)--FCCH - Filipino Canadian Community House "Filipino Heritage Day Fair", Lawrence Heights Community Centre, North York;
