The New Jersey-based  University of the Philippines Alumni & Friends Rondalla (native string ensemble) will celebrate its 25th anniversary of propagating the rondalla tradition in the United States and abroad with a concert on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at 3pm at the Dorothy Young Center for the Arts Concert Hall  (Drew University – 36 Madison Avenue corner Lancaster Road, Madison, NJ 07940).

The Philippine rondalla includes various 14-stringed instruments:  the bandurria provides the main melody; the laud and octavina provide the countermelody.  The group will showcase their repertoire ranging from traditional and contemporary music from the Philippines and other nations, light classical compositions to Broadway  themes  --  with guest artists tenor Anthony Lim and the Ligaya Cultural Group dancers.

Concert proceeds will benefit the Pagymanin Likas Musika rondalla instruments lending program for underprivileged children in the Philippines.  UPAFR president Diane Valencia remarked, “We believe that these children are as talented as their peers, they just need the opportunity and resources to benefit from the physical, mental, and life-building skills developed from learning to play music.”

Concert tickets are $15 prepaid, $20 at the door.
