THE ASSOCIATION OF FILIPINO CANADIAN ACCOUNTANTS (AFCA) OPENS SEARCH FOR ACCOUNTANCY SCHOLARS

Faithful to its established mission and mandate, the Association of Filipino-Canadian Accountants( AFCA) is pursuing one of its benevolent aims of contributing to the development of accountancy through a scholarship program in the Filipino Canadian community in Ontario, Canada. The 43-year old AFCA has recently announced that its "2021 Student Accountancy Scholarship Competition" is now open to interested and qualified Filipino Canadians. AFCA will award two(2) scholarship grants of financial assistance to the top deserving applicants who will also receive a certificate and a medal.
The highly competitive program is being undertaken to meet AFCA's "intention to inspire students and youth members to pursue accounting designation by providing access to AFCA events and career options in the finance and accounting industry." and rightly, a "way of giving back to the community." AFCA first started and awarded scholarship grants in 2004, the year that marked its membership topped 400 registrants.
AFCA, founded in 1980 by Winston Lim and 5 other accountants, is the leading organization of practicing Filipino-Canadian accountants and student accountants in Canada. The non-profit organization, currently headed by President Nimfa Villaroman-Santos, was incorporated in 1996 and registered with the Ontario Ministry of Consumer and Commercial Relations. It is based in Toronto, Ontario with about 1,000 members and is affiliated with the National Council of Philippine American Canadian Accountants (NCPACA) and the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA). AFCA members include designated professional accountants, bookkeepers, professional staff, private practitioners, private and public sector accountants and/or auditors who are working in various capacities in Canada, United States, and the Philippines.
The professional association is "committed to the development of its members to attain Canadian standards of competence and professionalism in Accounting " and other associated fields through seminars, workshops, and mutual support. For the past two years, AFCA has organized and presented online "bootcamps" and webinars such as 1) 4 A’S + 2”, Aligning Mindset in the Current Times 2) Develop Yourself the EI Way 3) Managing Cyber Security Risks Webinar Part 1 & II 4) Basic Investing Day Training 5) AFCA Toastmasters Club Demo Session 6) Project Management: Insights and Attitude 7) The Art of Giving and Receiving Feedback 8) Canada’s COVID-19 Economic Response Plan 9) Transformation for Personal Development 10) Personal Tax Updates 11) Resume Writing 12) Pag-IBIG Fund Information 13) Professional Networking Tactics for Success 14) Anti-money Laundering 15) Fraud Prevention and Protection for Business and other topics to be offered under the seminar planning pipeline.
In community outreach service, the AFCA is currently engaged in providing free training such as 1) free personal income tax returns preparation program for seniors and low-income groups 2) computerized bookkeeping training for new immigrants, and 3) its members in their individual capacities are actively involved with other Filipino-Canadian organizations in the fields of audit and finance.
