In Canada, there is an estimated 800,000 Filipinos. About 20% is in the Greater Toronto Area. Most Filipino workers are employed in the service and healthcare sectors, in the most vulnerable and precarious jobs. Despite the uncertain and harsh conditions of employment in other countries, Filipino workers migration from the Philippines continue in a large scale (estimated 5 to 6 thousand leave the country daily). The dire economic situation of the Philippines leaves the Filipinos no option but you leave their families behind and endure the separation that results from it.
The Filipino workers impact the landscape of the Canadian labour movement. It is in this light that the Filipino Workers Network is organizing and building the capacity of the Filipino workers here in Toronto and educate them on workers’ rights, wages, benefits, employment standards, labour unions and other labour related issues.
Filipino workers in the greater Toronto Area are strongly encourage to register and attend the one day workers’ conference. If you are a union member, ask your union to subsidize your registration fee. For more information and to register, please go to http://filipinoworkers.org/ or call Paulina Corpuz at .
WE MUST ACT NOW! Let us not be complacent and leave to others the work that we must all do to ensure that Filipino workers are informed, educated and involved. (Paulina Corpuz)
