INCHEON CITY OPENS CULTURE VENUE/STORE
FOR FILIPINO COMMUNITY
04 September 2015 – The Filipino community in Incheon, a city known to most Filipinos as the gateway to South Korea, has opened a kind of sari-sari store and cultural venue in one of the most diverse districts of the country.
At ceremonies held on August 23, Korean National Assembly Rep. Yoon Sang Hyun, who is also Special Assistant to President Park Geun-hye, and Park Woosub, Mayor of Nam-gu District in Incheon Metropolitan City, inaugurated the Philippine Culture Community Center during the Opening Festival of the Pyeonghwa Market in Sungui-dong.
First Secretary and Consul General Iric C. Arribas represented the Philippine Embassy at the ceremonies, which was also attended by Jang Seung Duk of the Nam-gu District Council. The center is among the country-specific multicultural public spaces Nam-gu Mayor Park pledged at the Juan Media Festival in late September 2014 to open at the Sungui Pyeonghwa Market.
In his remarks, Consul General Arribas expressed appreciation to Incheon and specifically to Nam-gu for establishing the Philippine Culture Community Center to foster friendship, camaraderie and goodwill among Filipinos and other residents of Incheon Metropolitan City. He thanked the Korean people for welcoming and opening their hearts to Filipinos.
The three-storey Center features an art space for exhibits and cultural performances by Filipino artists, a venue for Filipino community gatherings and a dry goods store specializing in imported Filipino food. Consul General Arribas met the members of the Filipino community dance group “Captured” during the tour of the Center.
FILIPINO ARTIST FEATURED IN ASIAN ART EXHIBIT IN JEJU, SOUTH KOREA
19 August 2015 – A Filipino artist was among nearly two dozen Asian painters featured in a recent exhibition dedicated to Asian contemporary art in South Korea’s special autonomous province of Jeju.
Philippine Ambassador to South Korea Raul S. Hernandez attended theopening ceremony of the 2015 Jeju-Asian Contemporary Art Special Exhibition on August 08 at the Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art located in the Jeoji Culture and Art Village in Jeju City, capital of the province and island of the same name in the southern part of the country.
In a speech, Ambassador Hernandez, who was accompanied by First Secretary and Consul General Iric C. Arribas, commended the Museum for organizing the exhibition entitled “Asia, Talk to Asia,” which provides a window into Asia and the dynamic realm of contemporary art as well as an opportunity to promote and foster mutual understanding of Asian cultures.
This exhibition, which runs until October 12, was organized to generate greater understanding of the Asian contemporary art scene, enhance cultural exchange among countries in the Asian region and promote discourse on the future of Asian contemporary art.
Since its establishment in 2007, the Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art has served as a venue for cultural and artistic enjoyment for art patrons.
