'The way we are - A Filipino motif display' graces Parramatta Council Library 29 May to 14 June in connection with Phl Independence Day celebrations, the 15th consecutive year the library has hosted the project.
This year's display explores the theme 'Getting to know us', made possible through educational posters of the Philippines' historical and political maps, ethnic groups, dances, traditional household items, medicinal plants and birds.
The display concept was developed by Parramatta 's multicultural librarian Ms Pauline Chan and Ms Evelyn Opilas when Evelyn was appointed community representative in 2000 to augment the Filipino collection at the State Library of New South Wales. Probably the last time the display would be hosted at its current venue, the display has been consistently supported by Parramatta Library, the Philippine Department of Tourism Sydney through Tourism Attaché Consuelo Jones and various community groups for 15 years.
Parramatta is a sister city of Cebu City, the Philippines' Queen City of the South. Other libraries around Sydney have adopted the concept including those in Blacktown, Campsie (Canterbury), Liverpool, Penrith, Kogarah, Sutherland, Chatswood, Ryde, Bankstown and Campbelltown set up by various community groups such as the Philippine Community Council of NSW, the Ilocano Association of Australia, the Pangasinan Province Association of Australia, the Australia Philippines Services League, the Association of Golden Australian Pilipinos Inc, the Ateneo Alumni Association of Australia, the Visayan Association, the Filipino Journalists Alliance of Australia and the Department of Trade Sydney.
