Markham Trustee Marlene Mogado Presides at Opening of New School

A much-needed and long-awaited school for the Cornell community in Markham City, Ontario has finally arrived.
The inaugural ceremonies for St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School was held on May 5, 2015, with The Most Reverend Bishop Wayne Kirkpatrick and Fr. Dominic Barber (Pastor of the local St. Patrick Parish) officiating at the Solemn Blessing, and Vice Chair of the York Catholic District School Board and Markham School Trustee Marlene Mogado emceeing the Official Opening.
"The new school addresses the modern-day needs of Catholic students in the expanded community of Cornell and its immediate vicinities, served by an old St. Joseph School that has outlived its existence," Trustee Mogado said.
The old school that first opened at 55 Parkway Ave. in 1966, re-opened at its new location at 388 White's Hill Ave.
The ceremonies included greetings and presentations from officials representing the local governments, the Ministry of Education, YCDSB, and the building contractors. Entertainment was provided by the students. An open house and refreshments followed.
The new St. Joseph CES is the second school credited to the work of Trustee Mogado. Her first school was the San Lorenzo Ruiz Catholic Elementary School in Markham Wismer community, which was named in honor of the first Philippine saint, and opened in 2008.
The YCDSB is the third largest Catholic Board in Ontario. It is made up of 10 elected Trustees. and two non-voting student trustees. It delivers educational programming to over 55,000 students in 104 schools throughout the Regional Municipality of York with an annual budget of over $600M.
