Fil-Aussie Wins in Migration Advocacy and Media Awards

Sydney based Filipino-Australian author Renato Perdon bagged the Migration Advocacy and Media (MAM) Best Print Award for best book category for his latest book Connecting Two Cultures: Australia and the Philippines published by Manila Prints Australia and scheduled to have a Philippine launching in Manila on 12 December, 2014, this was learned from the Commission on Overseas Filipinos recently.

Perdon, a historian and former historical curator of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines and archivist of the Sydney City Archives wrote about the historical and contemporary interactions and strong connections between the Philippines and Australia. The awardee previously authored eleven books on Philippine history, culture and language, both in the Philippines and Australia.


The awarding ceremony will be held at the SSS Magsaysay Hall in Quezon City on 18 December, in celebration of the Month of Overseas Filipinos and the International Migrants Day.

MAM Awards, founded in 2011 by the Commission on Filipinos Overseas (CFO), recognizes ‘outstanding media works that have raised public awareness on issues on Filipino migration, advocated the cause of Filipinos overseas and promoted a positive image of Filipinos overseas.’ The CFO congratulates the 10 best media works from the USA, UK, Australia, Hong Kong and the Philippines, as the 2014 MAM Awards winners.

The panel of judges consisted of members from migration and media institutions, which include the Philippine Migrants Rights Watch, Movie and Television Review and Classification Board, National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Philippines Information Agency, and National Press club of the Philippines.

Best Print Award (Article) – Philippines, PH, Korea Act to Prevent Sham Marriages, author: Jonathan Hicap, Publication: Manila Bulletin, Philippines.

Best Print Award (Magazine) – Singapore, OFW Pinoy Star, publisher: Luz Campos-Mesenas, editor: Clement Mesenas.

Best Radio Award (Regular) – Hong Kong, Pinoy Life Radio, hosts: Aileen Alonzo and Jun Concepcion, Radio Station: RTHK’s Radio 3

Best TV Show Award (Regular) – United Kingdom, Juan EU Konek, hosts: Danny Buenafe, Rose Eclarinal, and Gene Alcantara, TV Station: BS-CBN’s The Filipino Channel.

Best TV Show Award (Episodic) – Philippines, My Puhunan Goest to Dubai, host: Karen Davila, TV Station: ABS-CBN

Best Documentary – USA, Documented, director Juan Antonio Vargas

Best Interactive Media (Website) – USA, Positively Filipino, Website: www.positivelyfilipino.com, editor and publisher: Mona Lisa Yuchengo

Best Interactive Media (Blog) – Hong Kong, OFWS in Hong Kong, Website: www.ofwsinhongkong.wordpress.com, blogger: Juanito Concepcion
