The Ferdinand Blumentritt/Rizal documents in the Czech Republic

Ferdinand Blumentritt

As it appears that there is quite some misinformation and confusion in circulation surrounding the Rizal/Blumentritt documents in the Czech Republic I decided that it was time to clarify this matter once and for all. I give below the true and accurate story of the Rizal/Ferdinand Blumentritt documents in Ceske Budejovice.

The Blumentritt collection was immense. According to a letter of Friedrich Blumentritt from 1924 it consisted of:

A library of more than 800 titles

17.400 notes and sources referring to the scientific work of Blumentritt

1721 scientific and political letters from Blumentritts friends

More than 100 manuscripts

123 letters from Rizal to Blumentritt

More than 100 old maps

A part of the Ferdinand Blumentritt/Rizal collection was sent to Manila. The Philippines obtained those documents from Friedrich Blumentritt, son of Ferdinand Blumentritt in 1935 before the country had even been granted Commonwealth status by the USA.

The part of the Blumentritt collection sent to the Philippines contained: 293 letters, books, maps, cards, manuscripts, etc., a total of 56 Kg in fact. Included were the three sculptures Rizal had carved and sent to Blumentritt, Prometheus bound, Triumph of Death over Life and Triumph of Science over Death (unfortunately the original statuettes were either lost, misplaced or vanished otherwise).

During a Rizal Rhine boat trip with Dr. Karl-Heinz Wionzek (one of the great Blumentritt specialists in Europe) in 1995 he informed me about the existence of four boxes with Rizal/Blumentritt documents in Ceske Budejovice. In the year 1996 I started my Rizal research in the Czech Republic.

During my second trip in 1997 I met PhD Zdenka Vasiljevova and H.E. Ambassador Salas at the Philippine Embassy in Prague.

Meeting with PhD Zdenka Vasiljevova, March 1997

Meeting with H.E. Salas at the embassy in Prague, March 1997

Those meetings were the start of an extraordinary friendship with PhD Zdenka Vasiljevova and a new chapter in my Rizal research.

PhD Zdenka Vasiljevova (1935-2004) was a historian, specialist in Japanese studies and the history of East Asia, graduated from Charles University in 1958. She was a student of Professor Josef Polisensky. In fact, he was the first to point to the Blumentritt documents at the museum of South Bohemia in 1963.

However, the documents were first studied by PhD Zdenka Vasiljevova and confirmed the existence of the Rizal/Blumentritt boxes. End 1997 she informed me about the discoveries in Ceske Budejovice. The Noli and Fili dedicated to Ferdinand Blumentritt were located in the museum.

Letter PhD Vasiljevova, 30 December 1997

PhD Zdenka Vasiljevova published a Rizal biography in the Czech language in 1998 with some pictures of her discoveries.

How the Rizal/Blumentritt documents came to Ceske Budejovice?

When Friedrich Blumentritt had finished his studies he left Leitmeritz (Litomerice) for Budweis (Ceske Budejovice).

Friedrich Blumentritt did not sent all documents to Manila in 1935 and kept a personal collection of his fathers inheritance consisting of letters, postcards, envelopes, objects, sketches, sculptures and paintings. They were kept in the Blumentritt family.

After WW2 thousands of people were forced to leave the country by the Czechoslovak government, among them the Blumentritt descendants.

During my many visits to Ernst Blumentritt (98 years old!), the only living grandchild of Ferdinand, told me that the whole family, he himself included, were expelled and had to leave behind all their belongings. They left the country with only some suitcases. Part of the Blumentritt collection was confiscated and was stored at the Bohemian Museum in Ceske Budejovice. Due to the efforts of PhD Vasiljevova and the museum in Ceske Budejovice the Blumentritt collection was made known.

Ernst Blumentritt.

In 1998 I was invited for a visit and the gala opening of the first and only exhibition of Ferdinand Blumentritt /Jose Rizal collection and the Philippines at the museum in Ceske Budejovice. The collection was exhibited in the main hall and the entire left wing of the museum. Too many to mention all of them but let me sum up the most special one:

Original Noli me tangere with dedication to Blumentritt

Original El Filibusterismo with dedication to Blumentritt

Original Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas with dedication to Blumentritt

The gold pen the people of Pampanga donated to Blumentritt

Self-portrait Rizal, sketch Blumentritt by Rizal, boat with children by Rizal

Noli me tangere dedicated to Ferdinand Blumentritt

El Filibusterismo dedicated to Ferdinand Blumentritt

Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas dedicated to Ferdinand Blumentritt

Gold pen donated by the people of Pampanga to Ferdinand Blumentritt

There are 5 letters from Rizal and Blumentritt in which the gold pen is mentioned.

Blumentritt, Leitmeritz, 22 December 1890

They also have sent a gold pen for me.

Rizal, Brussels, 23 April 1891

Have you received a gold pen with diamonds incrustations? It was sent to you some time ago, but you have not written me anything about it. It is a gift of the Pampangos.

Blumentritt, Leitmeritz, 26 April 1891

The gold pen has not yet arrived. They wrote me that it was coming on the same boat that brought Isabelos letter with the draft. This came on the 21ste or 22nd of December, but the pen has not yet come.

Blumentritt, Leitmeritz, 20 June 1891

The gold pen is now in Europe. Ponce brought it from Barcelona to Madrid from where it will be sent to me opportunely.

Rizal, Paris, 9 October 1891

I have nothing more to do with the golden pen. It is still in Madrid. You will certainly receive it later, but at present there seems to be no chance for it.

No further correspondence is to be found in the Rizal/Blumentritt correspondence about the gold pen. The gold pen was considered to be lost.

In the Blumentritt collection there are also some original paintings/sketches of Juan Luna.

Drawing of a Filipina by Juan Luna

Sketch of Ferdinand Blumentritt by Juan Luna made in Leitmeritz, 8 April 1899

There are still some objects which are still lost or misplaced. More research is needed to clarify this.

Many thanks to the persons who helped me in my Rizal/Blumentritt research: PhD Zdenka Vasiljevova and her husband PhD Ivo Vasiljev, Dr. Karl-Heinz Wionzek, Ernst Blumentritt, Mag Helena Stejskalova and the South bohemian Museum.

Dear Sir Lucien:

Can you send this article of yours including the pictures for possible publication in the Bagumbayan? We might not use all the photos but just send them to us so we can make choices.

The latest issue of Bagumbayan came out last Monday. We have printed a news article on your lecture at the NHI. We are coming out with the next issue in March. The articles are now on layout in the press. We'll see if we can still accomodate this article on Blumentritt-Rizal documents in the Czech Republic.

Dear Mr. Lucien Spittael,

Congratulation for finding the "hidden treasures" of the Blumentritt archive in Ceske Budejovice.

I have heard the story of the possible existence of historical materials on the attic of a school in Ceske Budejovice from Mrs. Marianne Blumentritt in 1995, when we have organised a meeting in Kufstein/Tyrol with the former Philippine Ambassador to Austria, his Excelleny Jose A. Zaide Jr.

Incidentally, Marianne Blumentritt sadly passed away last November 26, 2009. She was the wife of Kurt Blumentritt, a grandson of Ferdinand Blumentritt.

This reminds me to continue my work on the Blumentritt -A. B. Meyer Correspondence, a convolute of about 200 letters which have never been published before. Some interesting details of this correspondence show some new light on the role of Germany during the Philippine-American War.

One of the most interesting finding in this correspondence is about the famous Filipino painter Juan Luna who stayed for a week in Vienna in April 1899. Actually the sketch of Ferdinand Blumentritt shown on this page and dated of April 8, 1899 was made just a couple of days after Juan Luna visited Adolf Bernhard Meyer in the Dresden Museum, Germany [Wednesday, April 5, 1899]. He was accompanied by Ferdinand Blumentritts son Friedrich ["Fritz"].

Keep on the good work, so we might be able to solve the Blumentritt puzzle.

All the best!

Dear Sir Lucien,

As we know you, you are like a "bull terrier"; biting yourself into the material and never let loose...
My sincere congratulations, not only for this article but for your continuous research of the life of Jose Rizal.
With regard to our talk last Saturday on the 10th Chartering anniversary of the Belgian Diamond Chapter, I will wait for your book...

Dear Sir Lucien
It is with great interest but also with deep emotion me and Leah read the fantastic article and background regarding the Blumentritt-Rizal documents in our favourite Philippine-European magazine Munting Nayon. We really feel you respect the goals and the trials in the life of Dr. Jose Rizal, the hero of the Philippines, which has become now also my second home country. Your research and non-stop controlling like only true historicans do, is rare in times where 'hurry' seems to be the word. I also truly hope that your research may benefit the relations between Filipinos and other nationalities all over the world. Congratulations also to Munting Nayon for showing a deep interest in the roots and goals of the Philippine national hero, so Rizal can be an example for all humans.
Yours sincerely

It is a BIG BIG mistake that the top European KOR officials blocked, hindered, stopped, prevented Sir Lucien Spittael from making a Presentation of these very significant and magnificent findings in the Prague, Czech Republic KOR European Assembly of mid-September 2009!

Sir Noubikko and the Prague Chapter were reportedly for it, but top European officials turned the Presentation down, for reasons known only to them!

Attendees were rather showered with BLAH BLAH BLAH about themselves, to show off their sashes/trinkets/medals, rather than share KNOWLEDGE of immense historical importance -- the Rizal-Blumentritt connection!

Must we wonder WHY many so-called Knights of Rizal are IGNORANT about Dr Jose Rizal, about Rizalian symbols, on Rizalism, about Rizalian ideas/ethics/teachings?

Those who know you personally, your honesty, integrity and love for the Philippine national hero, hold you in HIGH ESTEEM for your great, untiring RESEARCH work which is so far never been achieved in Europe! Some impostors even have the audacity to try to steal the laurels and claim them as their own, Sir Lucien!

Filipinos in the know SALUTE & THANK YOU and of course your wife too, Lady Madeline, kind Sir! Research work like yours entail great SACRIFICE/use of Resources!

Special THANKS likewise to Mr Eddie Flores and Munting Nayon for publishing all these hard facts!

Well done Sir Lucien,

I’m very proud to be one of your friends and it was very difficult for me to accomplish something after I hade to take over the El Fili Chapter as Chapter commander.
Its only a pity that the leadership of the European OKOR never responded on your invitation to come to your place and observe the study you are doing on Dr. Rizal.
To be frankly its there lose the rest of Europe know that the true historian on Rizal is you.

Regarding the golden pen.....it is amazing to have indeed arrived with F.Blumentritt and to find that out only after so many years.

Hi, Sir Choy, the book was NOT the "Imittation of Christ." It was a German text book Blumentritt earlier had sent to Rizal which, the day before his execution, Rizal donated the FB

Sir Lucien Spittael,

Thank you for this historical view and the very essential clarifications. In the Ceske collection, was there the Imitation a Christo, which was the last book Rizal had in his hands. He wrote in his last letter to Blumentritt, I send you a book. Was this the book?
