Pinay Paulina Corpuz Runs  for TCDSB  Ward 12 Trustee

With this solid personal distinction, Paulina Corpuz, launches her candidacy for School Trustee, representing Ward 12 of the Toronto Catholic District School Board in this coming municipal elections on October 27, 2014. Corpuz is one of at least 5 Filipino Canadians who are running for Trustee positions in Toronto's Catholic school system.

Starting out her campaign platform for Trustee, Corpuz with her preamble, laid out the following 3-point pledges:"Bring a fresh perspective in the governing body of the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB): the voice and living experience of a mother who has children in the Catholic school system, immersed in the realities of juggling the demands of professional work, family relationships and obligations which are important perspectives in decision and policy making. 

She hopes to further: “1)  Enrich the capability of the Board to govern through the rich and diverse experience I bring, having grown in a dynamic Catholic community where children and youth are inspired and actively involved in the life of the Church, Catholic school, and the community; 2) Engage the parents and community more and increase the presence of Trustees in the community; 3) Provide an example to my children and my community, the courage to stand up for what I believe and fight for my faith.”

Being an ardent Catholic parent, Corpuz is active in the Catholic school community, always involved in her children’s activities in school. She is currently the secretary in the Catholic School Advisory Council (CSAC), St. Theresa Shrine Catholic Elementary school. An active parishioner of St. Dunstan Roman Catholic Parish Church, she volunteers in the Liturgical Ministry. In addition, Corpuz is a Rosary Apostolate visitor, helping school children learn and pray the Rosary.

A committed volunteer and social activist, Corpuz is a strong supporter and member of community-purpose driven organizations such as the Couples For Christ Foundation for Family and Life, Philippine Independence Day Council, University of the Philippines Alumni Association in Toronto, Filipino Canadian Parents Association in Catholic Education, Community Alliance for Social Justice, Migrante, Philippine Press Club of Ontario, and National Ethnic Press and Media Council of Canada. She is also a founding member and current President of the Philippine Advancement Through Arts and Culture (PATAC).

Happily married to an accountant, Ben Corpuz, they have 3 children, aged 22, 16 & 12. Joyce as she is fondly called by her friends and relatives, is an oldest daughter & the 3rd among ten siblings. Growing up in Isabela, the Ibanag lass was educated in Catholic elementary and secondary schools and studied Psychology at the University of the Philippines-Diliman. In Canada, Corpuz earned through continuing education professional certificates in Business Analysis and Change Management, certificates in Internet Marketing, E-business and Web Marketing, Life Skills Coaching, and a certificate in Non-Profit Sector Management offered by the Centre of Philanthropy through Ryerson University. A lifelong learner, she continuously expands her knowledge and skills and has taken business, accounting and information management courses as well.

In the Philippines, Corpuz worked in the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Luzon Secretariat for Social Action (Caritas Filipinas Foundation) where she was engaged in helping diocesan social action centres develop and implement community based programs, coordinate relief operations and establish rehabilitation projects for disaster affected communities, and fundraising development.

Corpuz immigrated to Canada with her oldest daughter, in 1993, to reunite with her husband in Toronto. She worked with various non-profit, charity organizations and held progressively responsible jobs from administration, project coordination, donor & volunteer database management, business analysis to online fundraising activities.

Given her strong background and experience in Catholic lay work, non-profit service, and professional background in administration, change-directed development, online media and management characterized by her faith-filled aspirations and expectations, Paulina is an excellent candidate and hopes to help bring sound direction and purpose to the Toronto Catholic school board. In this respect, she will be in a strong position of contributing her quota to meeting and achieving desirable student success and performance in the current Catholic education climate.(TSJ).
