The Third Biennial Grand Reunion of SYMBIOSIS, the University of the Philippines at Los Banos Biological Society –USA Chapter was held in Memphis, Tennessee on July 9-10, 2016. Symbiosis is the first student organization founded in the Institute of Biological Sciences at UPLB. It commemorated its 40th year anniversary with celebrations both in Los Angeles, UPLB, Australia and the Middle East back in 2014.

Participants represented this time around were from the following batches: Synthesis, Polytene, Breakdown, Platelets, Synapsis, Linkage, Isozymes, Chiasma, Sapiens and Neurons.  This event was hosted by Dr. Bernadette Deogaygay, a nephrologist based in Memphis. Alumni members came from all over the United States including Florida, California, Texas, Ohio and Arizona.

The two-day event was highlighted by visits to the following landmarks in the Home of the Blues/Birthplace of Rock and Roll- Memphis: The Civil Rights Museum, Graceland, Beale Street, and the Peabody Hotel; it also included  trips to the famous Gerry’s Sno-Cone, Gus Chicken and Rendezvous Ribs Restaurants.

The reunion picnic food included a fusion of Philippine and Memphis cuisines. The famous Central BBQ ribs (home of the Memphis dry rub) was supplemented by lechon, pinakbet, grilled milkfish, green mangoes with bagoong and fruit salad to help conquer the humid Tennessee weather in July all spread out on banana leaves.

A side trip to the Gaylord Opryland Hotel, The Andrew Jackson’s Hermitage, Music City Center, Country Music Hall of Fame Museum and the Parthenon in Nashville capped the 2-day event. Plans are already being made for the 2018 Grand Reunion. Top venue contenders are Northern California and Las Vegas.

The event provided the attendees time to reminisce and renew friendships and camaraderie which are hallmarks of this organization. There was a lot of laughter as the alumni recalled their experiences during their time in the organization and as students at UPLB. Symbiosis boasts a number of notable alumni members who excel in the fields of government, business, medicine, education and research, many of whom, through their work and expertise, strive to improve the lives of the Filipino people.
