ELECTION IN THE PHILIPPINES

Election in the Philippines is a paradox. Movie stars aspire to become politicians by entering their name in the election in local or national government.  Meanwhile politicians, be they the veteran TRAPOS ( TRAditional POliticians), BIMPO ( acronym for Batang Isinubo ng Magulang sa Politica --English : scions forced by parents into politics) or New Politicians, pretend to be movie stars when campaigning.

These politicians sing, dance and emulate movie personalities. They pride themselves that they can dance gangnam style or sing like stage personalities.  People cheer them but to academics and true statesmen, these politicians who are wannabe movie stars, look ridiculous.  These politicians resort to these antics just to attract votes, oftentimes skirting the  true issues.  They want to maintain the status quo of politics.

On the other hand, some movie luminaries want to try their hands in politics, seeing how easy the job the politicians are doing,  and how easy the money is coming their way. Also, they seem to get away easily when they do not attend the meeting and  council, while the actors and actresses have to sweat it out during rehearsals and actual performances. The thespians have to act their roles to the best of their abilities or else their contract will be few and far in between. If the movie personalities get  elected, they have got to learn beforehand . the in and outs, the laws and regulations that govern their office. They can succeed why not. One shining they stop living in the make belief world and start to tackle the problems of their constituents as hard and true as they had practiced and rehearsed in their acting trade before.

Some elected officials who have movie personalities before, return to movie making while they are in office,  These officials are not too  different from company employees who are doing jobs on the side.  This side job is illegal and counter productive and should be discouraged and penalized by the company. Besides, this movie role looks sometimes, demeaning to the dignity of the office, the politicians are currently holding. But how fair is this to their constituents who do not get undivided attention from the politicians they elected to office ?

One observation is that politicians who became  movie stars  and vice versa movie stars who became good politicians have undue advantage in this election over regular candidates. Speaking of undue advantage in this election, candidates from a  political  dynasty, have a distinct favorable advantage over other candidates.  The dynasty has established political machinery, strong bailiwick,  distinguished name, has money, adherents, followers and probably a private army at their disposal.  Given the nature of a political dynasty, it keeps on proliferating as long as there are members of the family. But this should not be the case because political dynasty is prohibited under the 1987 Constitution of the Philippines Article 2 - Declaration of principle and state policies, Section 26 states : The  State shall gurantee equal access to opportunities for public service and prohibit POLITICAL DYNASTY as may be defined by law.
